Drivers of NPD Success: The 1997 PDMA Report
By Abbie Griffin, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign(Additional booklet contributors: Paul Belliveau, Stephen Markham, Edward McDonough III, David Olson, Albert L. Page)
This booklet reports on PDMA research on industry best practices in product development. It contains information about current NPD trends and practices against which you can compare your own firm, to diagnose strengths and weaknesses. This could then allow you to determine which actions your firm can take to further improve product development.
The first major study of product development practices to be widely disseminated was conducted by Booz, Allen and Hamilton in 1968 (and repeated in 1982). In 1989, with no additional studies seemingly forthcoming on the subject, PDMA undertook the challenge to provide timely industry-wide information about process and management changes in NPD, by sponsoring and underwriting regularly-scheduled research on this topic.
Since 1989, PDMA has conducted two major studies of NPD trends and best practice. This booklet reports on the latest survey, but also draws on information from the first study. Taken together, it provides a comprehensive and in-depth look at how businesses in America - particularly successful firms - conduct the difficult practice of product development. Excerpted findings from this study have been published in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Business Week, and USA Today. This booklet brings together the full set of results into one booklet. It is information every new product professional should know about, to serve as a guidepost against which to gauge their own product development efforts.
